Introduction

Te Waihora is a shallow, brackish coastal lake, Canterbury’s largest and New Zealand’s fifth largest, and an internationally important wildlife area.

Note that algal blooms on the lake can be extremely toxic to humans and animals.

The area is commonly used for gamebird hunting.
