Description
Join us on a wild adventure to the Catlins area. This volunteer trip will allow you to explore two reserves that are not open to the public. You will get a great insight into some special places and species.
Te Rere Reserve is important habitat for yellow-eyed penguins/ hōiho. In the late 1990s a fire swept through the reserve. We’ll join Southland Forest and Bird and support them in their efforts to restore the native forest.
Then we’ll head to Otanomomo Scientific Reserve where kahikatea, rimu and mataī giants emerge from the canopy of this rare forest remnant. We’ll pitch in with some planting and serious weed control – there’s blackberry, gorse and Chilean flame creeper to deal to.
Who can volunteer
Anyone aged 18 or over, who’s keen to spend a weekend with a group and do some work in the outdoors. Training will be provided.
There are limited spaces, so make sure to register quick so you don’t miss out!
What to expect
Fitness/skills required: This work is suitable for anyone aged 18 or over, of all levels of fitness and skills. Being able to move over rough ground is required.
Accommodation: Bunk-style accommodation at the Forest and Bird Tautuku Lodge. There’s a kitchen and showers. Everybody pitches in to help with cooking and cleaning up.
Transport: Transport to and from Dunedin is provided.
Food: Breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided. We do our best to cater for all dietary requirements (gluten-free, vegan etc.). Please let us know when you register so we can be well prepared. There are no food stores where we are staying. You will have to buy your own dinner on the Friday night.
Cost: $102 per person (plus dinner Friday).
A gear list will be provided upon acceptance of registration. Training will be provided.
